Abstract

Stress is an organism’s reaction to stimuli capable of causing emotional, physical, and psychological changes. Due to the characteristics of military police activity, these professionals are more vulnerable to occupational illness. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence and phases of stress among police officers from the Rádio Patrulha of the 1st Company of the 3rd Battalion of the Military Police of Paraíba, using Lipp’s Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults (ISSL) and correlating the results with sociodemographic variables. This is a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The results showed that 76.4% of the police officers did not present significant stress, while 12.7% were in the resistance phase, 5.5% in the exhaustion phase, 3.6% in the alert phase, and 1.8% in the nearexhaustion phase. The main symptoms identified were hypertension, muscle tension, insomnia, memory problems, and constant physical exhaustion. Greater vulnerability to stress was observed among male police officers aged between 30 and 40 years, with longer operational service time. It is concluded that radio patrol activity is directly related to physical and psychological exhaustion, reinforcing the need for institutional policies focused on mental health promotion and the prevention of occupational illness.
