Abstract
Military police work is characterized by high physical and psychosocial demands, exposing professionals to continuous stressors that may result in mental illness and institutional absenteeism. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of military police officers in the state of Paraíba who were absent from work due to mental and behavioral disorders between 2016 and 2025. This is an observational, descriptive, and retrospective study with a quantitative approach, based on the analysis of 168 functional records of active-duty officers obtained from the Medical Expertise Center of the Military Police of Paraíba. The analyzed variables included sociodemographic, occupational, and clinical aspects, such as diagnoses according to ICD-10, recurrence of absences, and type of leave. The results showed a predominance of male officers (73.2%), mainly aged between 40 and 49 years (57.7%), with higher incidence among enlisted ranks, especially Sergeants and Corporals. Anxiety and stressrelated disorders (F40–F48) were the most prevalent (61.5%), followed by mood disorders (32.1%). A high rate of functional restriction in administrative duties (54.2%) was observed, characterizing a phenomenon of institutionalized presenteeism, as well as a significant recurrence of absences (35%), suggesting the insufficiency of current psychosocial rehabilitation strategies. It is concluded that mental illness within the Military Police of Paraíba presents a structural nature, with well-defined epidemiological patterns, directly impacting operational capacity and indicating the need for preventive and integrated mental health policies at the institutional level.
